Are you a new seller on eBay (or haven’t sold in a while)? Ready to sell those million dollars of valuables in your garage or basement? Fed up with that hourly job and ready to start your new eBay business? Many new eBay sellers are excited to start selling on eBay and get their items listed. Well eBay may have an unwanted surprise for you. Selling limits.

eBay gives new sellers selling limits. Selling limits are quantity and dollar amount limits placed on your eBay selling. These are monthly limits. The limits can be reviewed by eBay for increase each month. eBay may or may not review and increase your limits. Users can request a limit increase each month. Know your limits before you subscribe to an eBay store. Your selling limits do not change because you subscribe to a store.

Your monthly selling limit may be 3 items and $500. eBay selling limits vary and are determined and set by eBay. That means you can only list/sell up to 3 items with a total value of $500 each month (or whatever your specific selling limits are).

Three items a month is nothing, why is eBay limiting my sales?

eBay doesn’t believe you can successfully sell on eBay until you prove it to them.

How can I raise my eBay selling limits?

The only way I know of to raise your selling limits is to:

1. Sell your 3 items monthly (or whatever your max becomes)

2. Maintain your eBay account in good standing (no late mail, unresolved customer disputes, etc).

3. Make sure you understand and follow eBays rules (not understanding eBay rules can cause you to quickly get temporary or permanent eBay restrictions).

4. Each month request an eBay selling limit increase (click eBay help and search “selling limits”).

5. Go to step 1. Be patient.  It can take a few months to build up your limits. Not to long after, eBay started raising my limits without my request.  My current selling limits are sky high.

I was frustrated (and !!@#%!) when I was excited about eBay selling and quickly learned about limits. It is important to list your monthly allotment and be a “good” eBay seller.  Why waste your time with 3 listings – because “eBay’s Logic” will be: “The guy can’t even list/sell 3 items… he doesn’t need a limit increase”.

Want to see your current eBay selling limits or request a selling limit increase?

On eBay, click eBay help and search “selling limits”

Terapeak product research is a product research tool available to eBay sellers with access to eBay Seller Hub. Terapeak product research allows you to see how products and categories are performing across all of eBays’s marketplace. Product research allows you to search up to 1 year of price history.

Terapeak sourcing insights allows sellers to access real-world data for every eBay category to develop their sourcing strategy and identify areas of opportunity. You can gain access to sourcing insights at no extra charge if you have an eBay Store subscription.

If you are an eBay seller logged in to eBay, the following link will take you to Tereapeak on eBay. If you are not an eBay seller or a seller that is not logged in the link will just take you to eBay. You need to be an eBay seller to access the tool. You need to have an eBa store to gain access to sourcing insights.

Terapeak (ebay.com)

While Terapeak and Worthpoint offer various beneficial seller tools, just in terms of item price research:

eBay search offers item price research for up the 3 months of price history.

ebay Terapeak search offers item price research for up to 1 year of price history.

Worthpoint search offers item price research for multiple years of price history.

Also note that for the eBay searches, most pictures and descriptions are lost after several months, while Worthpoint searches usually have full pictures and descriptions available with price history. Although Worthpoint does need a subscription for access and is better suited for researching collectibles, antiques and hard to find items.

eBay has just announced they are raising the minimum Promoted Listing Standard ad rate from 1% to 2%, effective July 11, 2022. This will affect many eBay sellers that use the minimum 1% setting, effectively doubling the Ad Rate fees those sellers will pay to eBay for sold promoted listings.

Other changes to the Promoted Listing Standard took affect June 1, 2022, at the beginning of this month. Previously, Promoted Listing Standard fees were calculated based on the sold price of the item only. Beginning this month, eBay began charging the ad rate based on the full selling price including the item price, shipping charge and state taxes. eBay selling fees are also based on the full selling price including item price, shipping charge and state taxes.

While the minimum ad rate has been raised from 1% to 2%, the maximum ad rate is still 100%.

If the item you wish to sell is commonly sold on eBay, you can use eBay Search to find current value of the item. When you do the initial item search, you will see what sellers are currently asking for their items. Some sellers allow buyers to make “Best Offers”, other sellers may have a fixed price without the option for making a best offer”. Other items may be sold in an eBay auction format.

As an eBay seller, the number you want to base your pricing, or at least your sold price expectation on is the actual sold price. Do not just do an item search and think the prices you see are the prices you can get for your items. Below we will explain the process of finding the eBay sold item prices using eBay search to find your items. Once caveat is that for fixed price items eBay may still display the original fixed price and not the “make offer” price that a buyer accepted.

Steps to find sold prices using eBay search:

1. Go to eBay Search through the eBay website or from your eBay App

Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles & More | eBay

2. Enter the description of the item you want to find into eBay search. For example, enter “dog treat jar” and press the eBay search button.

3. You will see a list of the currently available dog treat jars with the current asking prices.

4. Jump to 4B if you are using the eBay App. Look along the left side of the eBay screen until you see the options for “See only” and click on “Sold items”.

4B. Note for step 4 using the eBay app. When searching using the eBay app you should see “Filter” on the top right of your screen.

Select “Filter”.

Select “Show more” near the bottom of your screen.

Scroll down and toggle “Show Item”

Select “Show # results”

5. All the currently available items should be replaced with items that have been sold over the past three months. Some underpriced or overpriced items may have been sold, but the sold prices should be close to what you can expect to receive for your item.

Using eBay search to check sold item prices is definitely worthwhile. Result only include items that sold over the past several months. Other articles on this site will discuss Terapeak reasearch that covers a year of price history and Worthpoint that covers years of price history.

Worthpoint is a subscription-based website that allows users to search item price history based on items sold on eBay and other sold price sources. According to Worthpoint, Worthopedia (their price search service) has “Over 605 million prices realized from 350 data sources.” Worthpoint offers other services including a search for Marks, Autographs, Patterns and Symbols as well as a Library, Dictionary and other services.

Who should not use this tool? If you are selling brand new merchandise, this tool may not be for you. Current price history for most items can be found by researching prices on Amazon or eBay. On eBay you can search for the current item prices – but always do a second search with the option to only include sold items to get accurate pricing information.

Who should use Worthopedia (the Worthpoint price search tool)? Worthpoint may be for you if you want accurate pricing for antiques, collectibles and hard to find items. While eBay price searches may go back months or up to one year, the Worthopedia search goes back years. Searches on eBay may result in few or no price history for your item. For collectibles with a limited eBay price history, you may find that the item that sold for $30 on eBay has a price history on Worthopedia with recent repeat sales of $300. Worthopedia price history also includes original listing descriptions and pictures that are limited in eBay searches. I have almost undersold many collectibles on eBay because I would not have had accurate price history without Worthopedia. If you primarily deal in antiques and collectibles, you should definitely consider Worthpoint services.

Conclusion. This article has only reviewed one of Worthpoint’s services, Worthopedia for price history searches. Subscriptions are for separate and/or combined services. A limited free trial is offered. You probably don’t need this service if you need to research pricing on new products. If you need accurate pricing for antiques and collectibles and deal with many different items, then this service can be of definite value in terms of researching item information as well as pricing. Correct item and pricing information can quickly cover the cost of your subscription. More details and pricing information can be found on the Worthpoint website
